It’s True, It’s True, It’s True at Live

Two trips down to the Quayside in one day yesterday, as following my visit to Side, I went to Live Theatre to see a play I have been keen to see since it was announced earlier this year: It’s True, It’s True, It’s True. A hit when it was staged in Edinburgh Fringe, this Breach Theatre production uses the transcripts of the 1612 trial of Agostino Tassi for the rape of baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi to stage both a reconstruction of the trial and a powerful examination of attitudes to rape and how much they haven’t changed over the centuries. It’s a hard-hitting and unflinching show, though seamed with enough wit and imagination that it never becomes unbearable, even as it refuses to soften its subject matter. The performances of the all-woman cast were also astonishing – some of the best I have seen this year.Definitely one to catch if you can.
