So, it’s ‘get into Newcastle’ restaurant week, where loads of places in town are offering a chance to sample their wares on a budget – a great excuse to try new places, save some money, and help local eateries beat the January blues with some much needed custom. Which is great in theory, if you do it right, and I have managed it before: I tried the delights of the Muddler in summer during a similar scheme, and the bargain menu at Pleased to Meet You was also a treat. But, mostly, I do what I did last night: go somewhere I already know is good, determined to stick to the offers, and order from the regular menu and not save any money at all. Luckily last night at Cote was a joy, catching up with a bunch of friends I haven’t seen in months, so I was more than happy to miss out on a bargain (though did I order something different from my usual veggie sausage and sauteed potatoes – a mushroom and spinach crepe that was lovely, if a little rich for my tastes: I was too full for dessert! The horror!) But my inbox keeps filling up with suggestions of places I have never been and food I have never tasted, so a bit more organisation this year might be needed to get the best out of the city’s culinary scene!Must try harder, Tracey…
Yes, I did much the same. Took niece out for dinner, totally ignored the Restaurant week menu and went for the a la carte!!
