Making Money from Your Writing Panel at ALCS

Yesterday, I was lucky enough to be invited to speak at an ALCS on How to Make Money From Your Writing. The Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society is an organisation set up to make sure writers get paid for their work – I feel a little silly that I haven’t joined yet, that is definitely on my to-do list now! – and the panel was part of their meeting and AGM, which was held in the very fancy surroundings of the Vermont Hotel, in Newcastle.

I was a bit nervous about the whole thing, but it actually ended up being a total delight. The panel chair was ALCS Chair and prolific children’s author Tony Bradman , who really made everyone feel at ease, Barry Hutchison, who writes the popular Space Team series (and is also frighteningly prolific – I felt a bit of a slacker!) and blogger and writer Amy Lord, whose novel The Disappeared was recently published by Unbound and who runs the blog Ten Penny Dreams.

Everyone had very different experiences of the publishing and writing world, which kept things interesting, and I got to talk about my own experiences not just as an author but also as a freelance writer who uses my storytelling skills in my commercial / business writing as well. I certainly picked up some useful tips from my fellow panelists, which has given me a long to do list to action in the new year!

We also got to mingle with the members afterwards over drinks, and I met a whole bunch of fascinating people – and got to hang out with Justine Solomons of Byte the Book, who is one of the most inspirational (and supportive) women in publishing, and a joy to boot. (If you are in, or can get, to London, I really recommend joining Byte the Book, as they have some great networking and informational events.)

So thanks, ALCS, for a fantastic and informative day!

Like my writing? You can support me in a whole load of ways (some of them for FREE!)

If you’re skint: RTs and shares always welcome. Reviews of anything of mine you have read on Amazon or Goodreads or any book related/social media site, no matter how short, help boost profile. Tell your friends how lovely I am (leave out the needy bit.)

Wanna throw some cash my way?

Donate to my Ko-fi. All the cool kids have one. (I am not cool, obviously, but have been assured this is true).

Buy my books: Some are available for as little as a quid! Not these two, mind, but others.

Rom-com with a dash of Northern charm: The Bridesmaid Blues

Paranormal adventure with snark and sexiness: Dark Dates: Cassandra Bick Chronicles: Volume 1

If you want to read something a bit darker, I just re-released by earlier novel Doll and my short stories No Love is This.
